VALE Peter "Gonna" Galea From the Sec/Tres Canberra Reunion 2011
Firstly let me thank those that made this reunion yet another success. To Michael Taylor and his wife Helen thank you. Michael took on the role of convener and did all of the ground work and organization . Those who attended I am sure will agree that the venues, bus and boat trips were spot on.
I would also like to pay tribute to the late Neil Henderson who was assisting Michael on the ground in Canberra. For those who are not aware, Neil was unable to attend the dinner due health reasons, but did make it to the Barbie on Sunday. Sadly Neil passed away shortly after the reunion.
To Gareth, Fred, and Doug from the WA Assoc thank you for your support and hard work. Not forgetting of course Jenny and Ethel Etherington from Mackay who assisted in the organisation and donkey work before and after the reunion.
Registration day was held at the Olims Hotel which was not far from the war memorial. Management supplied us with a large comfortable room, (thanks to Mike Taylors superior negotiating skills). Hotel and staff were great, they were organised and pricing of drinks in bar within in the room were very good. In fact proceedings continued until well after 1900 as everyone was having such an enjoyable time.
Remembrance day looked initially like it was going to be bit damp, but it turned out to be a magnificent day. This was a first for Marilyn and myself and we both gave it the thumbs up. Might be because it is held at "The Australian War Memorial" that gives it a different feel or maybe the "Federation Guard" performing at their best. They are very professional and pretty much faultless. As an old school Chief QMG I would have loved to have been part of it. Very memorable day.
This reunion also included the dedication of a plaque which commemorated the service of both the Cruiser Hobart and the Guided Missile Destroyer Hobart . The dedication service, which we thought was going to be washed out at about 0900, was conducted at the Canberra war memorial, in lovely sunny weather, and was, as you can imagine very moving. Apart CNs representative, Guy Griffiths, Ross Swan, Paul Murray, and of course Mike Rayment plus other dignitaries, we were also joined by Ray Hunt's sister and Ray Butterworth's sister. The plaque was unveiled Ms Jennifer Hunt sister of CPO Hunt, Mrs Dorreen Herett sister of Ord Smn Butterworth, Mr Gordon Johnson representing cruiser Hobart, and myself representing Destroyer Hobart. For those interested you can log on to www.flickr.com/photos/australianwarmemorial and view the official photos taken by war memorial's official photographer.
The two hundred and twenty five attendees who sat down to dinner at the Southern Cross Club on the Sat night, enjoyed of great food and great company. We were also able to get a small choir made up of members of the Sing Australia organisation, who not only performed "The Name of our Ship is Hobart", but several other well known popular songs. In fact there was a lot of video footage taken on the night, this footage included a lot of group shots, some interviews, plus the choir. Copies of this video can be purchased for $10 Inc postage by contacting myself arranging payment and said DVD will be mailed to you.
Incidentally the room we had at the SCC was excellent, and staff did a wonderful job looking after us. Also, on display in the room and positioned so that everyone could see them, were scale models of all three Hobarts. The detail shown on these models was exceptional.
Bus tours were enjoyed by those took them, and the luncheon cruise on Lake Burley Griffin were most informative, very relaxing, great food and yes, very enjoyable.
The final function was BBQ held at Eddison Park, Phillip and catering was carried out by the Vietnam Veterans Federation (ACT Branch). Ideal spot for a Barbie and enjoyed by all. (mind you getting to the heads was a challenge),and as usual we were all on our best Behaviour.
Thanks to every one who supported the reunion, because your support ensures the success of the reunion.

Reunion 2013 Probable Location South Australia
In November 2014 Albany WA will be hosting the celebration of the ANZAC troops and support ships departing for Gallipoli. At this point in time we are unsure of what ships, people etc are participating. We understand that ships taking part(this will include cruise ships) will arrive Albany waters on the 30th and 31st of October 2014 and depart on the 1st November 2014. Currently the info we are working on is not from official sources, but Doug Ryan who lives in Mt Barker is in the throes of correcting that situation. Once that occurs we will be in a position to advise actual the actual programme. The sole purpose in publicising this event on our web site is to gauge interest of caravanners and others who are interested in attending this event. Before I continue let there be no misunderstanding, this will "not be a reunion". As this is the centenary of the fleet departing Albany, we in the west thought it would be an event we could certainly support, as its only a six hour drive from Perth and a beaut spot as well. Therefore we are inviting anyone interested to join us. There will be no registration process or major functions organised - it will simply be a get together. We understand that accommodation which includes caravan parks will be in short supply and therefore will need to booked well in advance. It might therefore be possible for every one to stay at the same venue. Ok in a nutshell anyone who is interested please contact me and we will go from there. Regards Trevor Cangemi Pres WA
